Book Opportunities
The JPG Heritage Partnership has been given a unique opportunity in that we have received "full reproduction rights"
to reproduce the "Old Timbers Lodge" book by Chilton Thompson. This book not only highlights one of the most notable
locations on the former Jefferson Proving Ground property, but also tells much of the history associated with the site.
The ability for our group to reproduce the book helps to preserve this history and gives a single source for aquiring
a book that cannot be found anywhere else.
Oct. 2005 - The "Old Timbers Lodge" book has been received from the
printing company !!! The book has been reproduced as near the original as possible, with NEW COLOR photos added, along
with an updated narrative written by the original author - Chilton Thomson. This book is NOW available for purchase
on this website !!!
We also have another book that has been recently printed on the "St. Magdalene Church", this book was
written by Barbara Jachimiak and outlines the church before the government take over of the JPG Army ammunition testing facility.
This church was destroyed and the book continues by showing how the church survives in it's present form today. This
book is NOW available for purchase on this website !!!
Oct. 2005 - We have received a grant to publish a book that will cover
"historical accounts" from oral interviews received from individuals about the Jefferson Proving Ground and the area prior
to the government purchase of the land. The oral histories are currently being collected and compiled into a book format
with anticipated release of the book around March 2006.
We are currently taking additional oral history accounts, both tape recorded and hand written. These oral histories
are being transcribed as well as being converted to audio cd's for archive safe keeping. The book publishing committee
is meeting once a week in an effort to obtain the oral histories and to create the upcoming book.
Oct. 2006 - The "Newspaper Articles" book has been received from the printer
and is now available for sale. This book included hundreds of newspaper articles from 1939 - 1940 about the take over
of the area by the government to form the Jefferson Proving Ground. It is excellent reading to go back and see what
the people of the area were going through as their land was being converted to a military base.
Apr. 2007 - The book committee has nearly completed the "Oral Histories"
book. After over a year of preparation, the book is in final editing (getting it's last touches of polish) prior to
sending it to the publishing company. Trafford Publishing has already been contracted to do the publishing as soon as
the book arrives at their site.
Nov. 2007 - Thanks to considerable work by Mike Moore, the Sue Baker's
book "Echos of JPG" has been reprinted in it's original format as a hard back book with dust cover. The book has
the same quality and look as the original and is available from the JPG Heritage Partnership or at Historic Hoosier Hills
RC & D.
