Meeting Minutes

November 16, 2004

The Jefferson Proving Ground Heritage Partnership met at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16,

2004, at Holiday Inn Express at Madison. President Norma Lou Irwin presided.

Minutes were approved as published on a motion by Ken Knouf, seconded by Louis Munier.

The financial report was reviewed and filed for audit on motion by Lilian Carmer

seconded by Bill Sanders.

Ken Knouf announced a $1,000 check has been received from the family of Hallie Miller

to be earmarked for a second edition of the book “Old Timbers,” written by Chilton

Thomson. Plans are to include remarks by Thomson, additional photographs and information.

Report on the Nov. 13 seminar was given by Lilian Carmer and Ken Knouf. Comments

by those attending were “very good day” and “worthwhile.” It was determined a total

of 51 people attended, although some did not attend all the sessions. The dinner

served to 45 persons by Barger Catering was well received and rated a 10 on a scale

of 1 to 5. Proceeds were estimated at $1,140, which included receipts of the silent

auction. Thanks were expressed to the Jennings County Library, where the seminar

was held.

It was decided to hold the seminar in Ripley County next year with emphasis on history

of Ripley County families displaced by the JPG. Other topics suggested were Marble

Corner, Old Timbers, schools in the area and construction of the JPG facility. Date

of the seminar will be earlier so it will not conflict with the opening of gun deer

season. Possible places for the seminar were suggested.

David Lee reported other organizations besides the partnership that helped with

parking at the Regatta have not been paid. He will be speaking with the Regatta

again regarding the money they owe the partnership.

Bill and Janice Sanders reported that dues for 2005 are payable now. Carl Busch

made a motion to establish an associate member category with dues of $15. David

Lee seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. The bylaws will be amended to

reflect the new membership category.

Ron Harsin reported on the number of hits on the web site with 355 hits the past

month. He has added several pictures and articles to the archive pages. The address

is www.JPGHeritage.org.

Ken Knouf made a motion to put a grant package together for up to $50,000 to fund

a position for a transcriber and to publish the oral histories in hard-back book

form. Ron Harsin seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. The application

will be made to the Rising Sun Regional Foundation.

Approval was given to pay $1,000 on the debt owed to HHH on a motion by Ken Knouf

and seconded by Bill Sanders.

Louis Munier displayed an original State Road 29 sign which he purchased several

years ago. He reported he would donate it to the partnership.

The collection taken at the meeting amounted to $15.50.

Evelyn Comer sent word to the group she and Marilyn Browning were unable to attend

because of a wreck in their area.

The next meeting is Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Jennings

County Library with a pitch-in supper.
